Reader Question: What Is Synesthaesia?

Here’s another NLP Jargon question from Mike.

So what is synesthaesia in NLP terms?

I guess I’d classify synesthaesia as a phenomenon, something that happens as sensations criss-cross in our nervous system. Generally, it manifests itself as an overlap of sensory information where visual information mixes with auditory information and/or kinesthetic information and vice-versa. This gives way to anchoring, both as a skill and a manifestation of synesthaesia.

You’ll hear synesthaesia reflected in people’s language:

“I feel what you’re saying.”

“I can see what you’re saying.”

“That’s a dark sound.

“That color is loud!”

“What a sweet sound to hear…”

Notice how the two words used in each sentence don’t match the same sensory system. These synesthetic metaphors reflect synesthaesia patterns at work in the nervous system.
